Scissor Emasculation of Wheat and Barley1

  1. D. G. Wells and
  2. H. R. Caffey2

Clipping barley and wheat florets just below the anther tips with scissors several days before normal dehiscense proved to be an efficient and effective new emasculation procedure. The green anther bases were not removed from the clipped florets. Bulk pollination 3 days after scissor emasculation produced good seed sets. Emasculation by clipping the florets across the anther bases too severely pruned the pistils of wheat for seeds to form after bulk pollination but had little apparent effect on barley. Clipping florets above the anthers was not an effective emasculation procedure.
