Hardening Behavior of Sweetclover (Melilotus Spp.) Varieties in a Subarctic Environment1

Synopsis

Synopsis

Eleven sweetclover varieties were evaluated for winter survival, carbohydrate reserves, trends of cold resistance development, and nitrogen content of root tissue. Arctic, Brandon dwarf, Erector, and Alpha were the only varieties to give any appreciable winter survival. Carbohydrate reserves were adequate in all varieties. Arctic, Brandon dwarf, and Erector showed significantly higher cold resistance and content of various nitrogen fractions. The possible role of various nitrogen fractions in cold resistance development is discussed. Water soluble protein appeared most closely associated with cold resistance.
