Synopsis

Mutant alfalfa plants, first observed in a S1 population, were characterized by an elongated hypocotyl and a chlorophyll deficiency. Data suggest that both of these characters were conditioned by the presence at one location of recessive genes in the nulliplex genotype aaaa. The gene symbol el was proprosed.
