Synopsis

Forty years ago Garner and Allard discovered the control of flowering by “the relative length of day and night.” Etiolation, seed germination, and many other aspects of growth have been shown to be subject to the same control. The ways in which studies of the action of light have led to these discoveries are illustrated.
