Respiration of ripening soybean seed was closely correlated with seed moisture content. Temperature affected the respiration rate, but was less important than moisture content. Solids in the leachates collected under plants exposed to rain and under intact pods exposed to simulated rain consisted mainly of materials such as salts which were burned to ash. Sugar contents of these leachates were very low compared to a leachate collected under shelled seeds.
