Synopsis

Synopsis

Stem solidness readings of F2 plants contribute slightly more information than do actual cutting percentages to the determination of sawfly cutting in the F3 generation. However, average genetic gains expected in the F3 progenies by selecting for stem solidness or percentage sawfly cutting in the F2 generation were negligible and erratic. The results suggest that selection for sawfly resistance in the F2 generation is of little value in breeding resistant varieties.
