Synopsis

Root penetration of potatoes was inhibited at plow depth by the hardpan which was induced by normal tillage. A complete shattering of this pan favored a deep and well-developed root system. In fine sandy loam, compaction by traffic in the spray-wheel furrow also restricted horizontal root development.
