Effect of Varying Leaf Area by Partial Defoliation and Plant Density on Dry Matter Production in Corn1

  1. Paul Hoyt and
  2. Richard Bradfield2

The net assimilation rate of corn was linear to leaf area index when this was less than 2.7 but declined rapidly when it was above that value. In a stand with a leaf area index of 3.3, dry matter produced per square meter of leaf area from grain initiation to maturity by the top, middle, and bottom leaves was of the ratio 4:2.2:1.
