Synopsis

Synopsis

Band-placement of seed and fertilizer increased the yield when adverse environmental conditions followed the seeding date, but not under more favorable conditions. The level of intra-crop competition during the seeding year increased as seeding rate and population increased, but was also influenced by the environment. Intra-crop competition was apparently lower when emergence was delayed 3 weeks due to dry weather. High levels of intra-crop competition may limit plant size and subsequent yield.
