Synopsis

Synopsis

Moisture storage was increased 3 out of 6 years under stubble mulching and was not decreased the other 3 years. Grain yields were correlated with moisture available to the crop. Nitrate nitrogen in the soil was less under stubble mulch than under no-residue but amounts were adequate to produce grain yields as great as possible with existing moisture supply. Fertilization with N increased the nitrate nitrogen content of the soil but had no effect on grain yields.
