Soil Temperature Effects on Phosphorus Availability1

Incubation temperatures above 59° F. reduced water- and NaHCO3-soluble P concentrations in P fertilized soils, but had no effect over the 45 to 80° F. temperature range on P solubilities in non-phosphated soils. Growth and P uptake by barley grown on similar cropped soils were closely associated with soluble P concentrations in the uncropped, incubated soils. At soil temperatures above 59° F., barley growth increased with increased NaHCOs-soluble P concentrations, even at concentrations greatly exceeding 16 ppm.
