Colorimetric Determination of Protein in Feed and Forage Crops1

A colorimetric method using Orange G dye for the determination of protein in feed and forage crops is described. With each of six crops tested, a good correlation was found between Kjeldahl nitrogen percentage and the dye-binding characteristics of the plant proteins. The method is reproducible, rapid and easily adapted to a simplified routine operation.
