Growth of tomato plants in relation to moisture retention in uniform and layered sand columns was investigated in growth chamber environment. Fourteen acrylic plastic columns were filled with alternating coarse- and fine-textured sand in seven different layering arrangements, each replicated twice. Tomato plant growth and root distribution within the layered columns were correlated with moisture retention of the respective layers.
