Plant Growth and Root Distribution in Layered Sand Columns1

  1. W. J. Flocker and
  2. H. Timm2

Growth of tomato plants in relation to moisture retention in uniform and layered sand columns was investigated in growth chamber environment. Fourteen acrylic plastic columns were filled with alternating coarse- and fine-textured sand in seven different layering arrangements, each replicated twice. Tomato plant growth and root distribution within the layered columns were correlated with moisture retention of the respective layers. Implications of results to field irrigation management are discussed.
