Estimate of Optimum Plot Size for Cotton Yield Trials1

Abstract

Abstract

We used data from 55 variety trials, four cultural experiments, and a uniformity trial of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. (Upland) and G. barbadense L. (Pima), to estimate soil heterogeneity and optimum plot size. Estimates of soil heterogeneity varied primarily with trial location. Optimum plot size was estimated from variety yield trials to be 53 m of total row length, and from a single uniformity trial to be 9 m. Shape of plot has little effect on plot variability.
