Frequency and Severity of Defoliation of Crownvetch Stems by Grazing Sheep1

  1. Richard H. Hart2

Abstract

Abstract

When crownvetch (Coronilla varia L.) was grazed by sheep (21 sheep/ha for 9 days), the probability that a leaf-bearing stem would be grazed on any day was J34. Over !!O% of the leaves were removed from nearly all grazed stems, but 21 to 40, 41 to 60, 61 to 80, and 81 to 100% of the leaves were removed from equal numbers of stems. Stem tissue was seldom removed. The pattern of leaf and stem removal under grazing was totally different from the pattern under clipping.
