A Simple, Inexpensive Watre Bath for Precise Temperature Control

  1. Louis A. Spomer2

A simple, inexpensive water bath for precise laboratory temperature control is described. The bath was constructed from common materials at an actual cost of less than $35. Bath temperature is maintained slightly above ambient by a large volume mercury-toluene thermoregulator and mechanical heat proportioner. This apparatus has maintained 20 C with maximum short fluctuations of ± 5 × 10−4 C and drift of + 2 × 10−3 C day−1 for continuous periods up to 25 days.
