A simple, inexpensive, and durable electronic sensor for automatic operation of rainfall shelters for research plots is described. The advantages of the new circuit are: (i) the very high input resistance overcomes problems associated with low conductivity of rainfall; (ii) the limited amount of current through the grid reduces corrosion; and (iii) the time delay prevents reversing of the shelters while in motion. Provision for heating the sensor grid prevents condensation of dew and hastens evaporation on cloudy days after rain stops.Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
