Abstract

Abstract

Differences in palatability, as measured in short-term cafeteria grazing trials, are not always reflected in animal performance under season-long grazing. ‘Kenwell’ tall fescue, selected for greater palatability, and ‘Kentucky 31’ tall fescue were grazed with yearling beef steers for 4 years. Mean stocking rate, average daily gain, and gain per hectare were all lower on Kenwell. Forage availability was the same on both varieties in 3 years, and higher on Kenwell in 1 year.
