Abstract

Abstract

In a greenhouse study diurnal variation in water deficit, resistance to water transport and the internal plantwater relations of rice (Oryza saliva L., Var. IR-8) plants were determined to understand the phenomenon of wilting in rice plants. It seems that wilting occurs at a definite value of turgor pressure rather than the complete absence of turgor pressure and is associated with a marked change in the elastic property of the leaf tissue. The wilting may also be affected by the resistance to water movement in plant tissues. Wilting phenomenon is not related directly with the 15 bars soil moisture suction.
