Cultivar Blends in Safflower1

  1. George H. Abel2

Abstract

Abstract

Cultivar blends of safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) were evaluated to determine if there were any favorable competitive interactions for yield of seed or oil.

In a 50:50 blend of ‘Gila’ and ‘12417’ there was an average over-compensation of 3.6% for seed yield and 3.9% for oil yield. For a 50:50 blend of ‘Dart’ and ‘1415430’ there was undercompensation for both seed and oil yield in the 1 year of testing. Generally, seed and oil yield of the blends did not exceed that of the better cultivar planted alone.
