Abstract

Abstract

The magnitude of sample contamination of a modified Suzue model CP37OC combine (Suzue Agricultural Machinery Co. Ltd., Japan)8 was determined for plot lengths of 1.5, 3.0, 4.5, and 6.0 m of ‘Labelle’ rice (Oryza sativa L).

Treatments consisted of four plots, dyed with red, green, and purple Rhodamine dye, and the fourth plot left undyed. Plots one, two, and three were cut and discarded. Plot four was cut and 10 subsamples of 100 seed each were taken to determine percent red, green, and purple seed.

Sample contamination ranged from 9 to 20% as plot length decreased from 6 to 1.5 m. Contamination varied inversely with proximity and plot length. Rice research plots which are normally 4.5 to 6 m would result in a sample contamination of 9 to 12% with this combine.
