Fertilozation Applicator/Planter for No-till Small-grain Research1

Subsurface placement of fertilizer under no-till, small-grain soil fertility research presents unique problems to researchers if minimum soil disturbance and minimum residue incorporation is desired. A fertilizer applicator/planter was built from commercially available parts and designed to allow evaluation of fertilizer rates, sources, and placements under no-till, small-grain production. It has been demonstrated to successfully plant through at least 3000 kg/ha of year-old prostrate residue and through 4000 kg/ha of fresh, standing small-grain residue. Residue levels higher than this have not been tested. Three people can fertilize/plant 50 plots/h, changing rates, placements, and sources.
