Abstract

Many problems in designing, specifying, building, and maintaining athletic fields have been resolved by developing a system called the Prescription Athletic Turf System. This system uses a plastic barrier under a slitted drain pipe which is covered by a sand profile and a noncompacting surface top mix that stores much available water. Suction pumping for rapid drainage permits a level field. Soil moisture sensors, time clocks, and electric valves permit automatic subirrigation providing all-season automatic water control. Soil warming by electric cables permits extended turf growing, and keeps the surface ready for use in cold weather. Additional index words: Drainage, Plastic barrier, Sand profile, Slitted drain pipe, Soil warming, Subirrigation, Soil compaction.
