Influence of various fertilizers on root development in a turfgrass mixture1

Abstract

A fertilizer trial was established in Spring 1969 on a medium loam with neutral reaction and a high content of nutrients. Twenty-four fertilizers which ranked in N content from 6 to 38% were applied to a newly sown turf. N fertilization rate was 20 g/m2. Root analyses after more than 3 years showed that up to that time no significant differences were evident with the exception of roots from unfertilized plots, which in most cases had significantly better developed roots. The addition of herbicides to fertilizers showed a tendency for reducing the amount of roots in the uppermost soil layer. Additional index words: Herbicides fertilizer mixtures, Root depth, Fertilizer formulation.
