Proposed Standards and Specifications for Quality of Sand for Sand-Sail-Peat Mixes1

Two parameters are suggested to define the quality of sand for sand-soil-peat mixes. Fineness modulus is an index of weighted mean particle size, uniformity coefficient is an index of grading, i.e., the range of particle sizes making up the predominant part of a sample. A fineness modulus range of 1.7 to 2.5 and a uniformity coefficient less than 4 are proposed as specifications. The data show that where these standards are met it may be unnecessary to specify limits on the quantity of very coarse or very fine materials, or on the percentage that should fall within specified particle size boundaries.
