This is an outstanding book on a subject that is complex and commands the attention of some of the most creative researchers in agronomy, crop, soil science, and related disciplines. The authors contributing to the current edition of Agronomy Monograph 23, Dryland Agriculture, represent the best scientists who are at the forefront of researching this multifaceted subject. The authors' diverse scientific backgrounds in dryland agriculture provide you, the reader, with a wide range of perspectives and a great depth of understanding on the intricate issues associated with dryland agriculture. Their expertise is shared in this excellent monograph, which is sure to be a valuable research and teaching reference for use by students, research scientists, and many others throughout the world who are concerned with the challenges associated with maximizing agricultural productivity and profits in regions of limited precipitation.

This edition of Dryland Agriculture covers a wide array of subjects, ranging from presentation of the current understanding of the important fundamental plant and soil issues associated with dryland agriculture to a presentation of important management strategies that can minimize production hazards found in crop and livestock systems cultivated under dryland conditions. Hopefully one of the outcomes of this monograph would be to stimulate expanded efforts to continue to research complex issues associated with producing crops and livestock under very challenging conditions associated with dryland agriculture.

We certainly appreciate the efforts of the editors, Drs. Gary A. Peterson, Paul W. Unger, and William A. Payne who skillfully guided the development of this book. The editors, along with the high quality authors provide a truly excellent book, one in which the American Society of Agronomy, the Crop Science Society of America, and the Soil Science Society of America can be justly proud. We hope that you find this book to be a valuable asset to your increased understanding of dryland agriculture and that it stimulates further scientific inquiries into this important worldwide subject.

Preface

The editors of the original Dryland Monograph published in 1983 commented that, “Dryland agriculture is a dynamic and highly complex system in which the major limitation on food and fiber production is a deficiency of water.” This assessment remains valid for the 21st century, and in fact dryland agriculture is of more consequence now than then because the world's dependence on food produced in dryland areas is even greater. In recognition of this, and the fact that global food supply is increasingly interconnected, this volume takes a world view of dryland production continent by continent, whereas the original monograph had a regional theme focused only on North American dryland farming. The initial chapters of the monograph address the principles that underlie all dryland farming. H.E. Dregne and W.O. Willis, editors of the original dryland monograph, pointed out the value of the principles most succinctly: “these principles underlie the practices that provide the common thread that unites the science and art of dryland farming. Success depends on adapting the principles to the particular environment.” Obviously the principles set forth in the initial chapters are the basis for the following chapters that address dryland farming issues around the world. Chapter authors were chosen based on their expertise for their particular discipline and/or region.

Special thanks are due the other members of the Editorial Committee, who guided preparation of the monograph: Drs. R.L. Anderson, R.L. Baumhardt, M. Lindstrom, and P. Rasmussen. Deep appreciation is expressed to the authors for their forbearance during this long process and for so graciously tolerating the multiple delays that have occurred.
