Meiosis in Two Species of Trifolium and Their Hybrids1

Meiosis in the interspecific hybrid (2n=24) between Trifolium repens L. (2n=32) and T. occidentale D. Coombe (2n=16) was characterized by averages of 4.55 III, 3.45 II, and 3.45 I per microsporocyte at diakinesis and metaphase L The maximum frequency of eight trivalents and the other chromosome associations suggested close homology between the parent genomes and among chromosomes of the gametic complement of T. repens. Meiosis in T. repens and in 2x T. occidentale was regular. Meiosis in the 32-chromosome hybrid between T. repens and 4x T. occidentale was similar to meiosis in 4x T. occidentale, which was considered normal for a newly induced autotetraploid. This similarity is considered verification of a close phylogenetic relationship between the two species.
