Abstract

Abstract

The phenotypic diversity for vigor, height, date of flowering, spread, and growth habit was evaluated in 20 accessions of Astragalus cicer L. Significant differences were found among the accessions for the characters measured. This indicated that progress could be expected from a breeding program. Simple correlation coefficients were calculated between vigor and the other characters. Height and date of flowering were highly correlated with vigor in the seedling year. The origin oE 11 accessions was traced to a single introduction (P.I. 66,515) made in 1926. There were significant differences among these 11 accessions for all characters measured; thus, the original introduction contained a large reservoir of germ plasm.
