Abstract

Abstract

Permanent control of wheat stem rust in North America may be possible by managing the evolution of the pathogen through appropriate use of both general and specific resistance. Methods of breeding for rust resistance can be classified into those that put selective pressure on the rust and those that minimize selective pressure. It is proposed that rust be controlled in North America by assigning genes for specific resistance to particular areas, perhaps three in number, and by concentrating on general resistance in the overwintering area.
