Abstract

Interpollination of colchicine-induced 56-chromosome amphiploids selected for fertility and seed set through six generations resulted in meiotically unstable plants representing nearly the entire range of 42 to 56 chromosomes. Within one line, meiotically stable plants (2n42) were recovered from crosses between amphiploids and F1 annual ryegrass ✕ tall rescue. Several of these were superior to tall rescue in seedling vigor, total forage yield and palatability. Meiosis of progenies of reciprocal cross combinations tended to be similar to that of the maternal parent as measured by the number of micronuclei perpollen quartets.
