Susceptibility of Tall Fescue, Festuca arundinacea Schreb., to Crown Rust1

Factors affecting infectivity of urediospores of Puccinia coronata Corda. var. coronata were determined to develop procedures for screening large numbers of ‘Goar’ tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plants for crown rust resistance. Urediospores stored 246 days at 4 C showed little reduction in pathogenicity; those stored for 270 days were virtually noninfective. Spores diluted in talc gave consistently more infections than those diluted in water; infectivity varied directly with spore concentration. Best rust incidence occurred on Goar plants maintained at 24 C. Several rust-resistant Goar seedlings were identified using the described technique.
