Performance of Sugarbeet Hybrids as Diploids and Triploids1

The pollen parents of two diploid sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) hybrid cultivars were converted from diploids to tetraploids. The root yield of triploid hybrids produced with tetraploid pollinator 663 averaged about 10% higher than the equivalent diploid hybrids, but the sucrose concentration was reduced. The performance of triploid hybrids produced with the tetraploid pollinator 413 were similar to those of equivalent diploid hybrids.
