One hundred F3-deprived lines were established from each of 31 soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] crosses. From these 3,100 F4 lines, 658 were yield-tested and simultaneously two F5 lines were established from each F3-derived line. About 25% (153) of the 658 F3-derived lines were selected and tested with their respective F5-derived lines. The correlations of yields of F3 with F5-derived lines were all positive and were significant in 13 of 16 cases (mean r = 0.581).
