Abstract

Abstract

A Technicon Dickey-john Near Infrared (NIR) Analyzer (lnfra Alyzer) was used to determine if NIR analyses could be used to study protein translocation in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). It was calibrated, using Kjeldahl protein values, for wheat head and vegetative protein. These calibrations were tested with samples from a field experiment involving different cultivars, different levels of N application, and time of application. Correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between Kjeldahl and NIR protein from head emergence to maturity. For wheat head protein, the overall r = +0.82 and for wheat vegetative protein, r -- +0.97. It was concluded that NIR analyses were sufficiently accurate to be utilized in wheat protein translocation studies.
