Screening Pearl Millet for Variability in Supporting Bacterial Acetylene Reduction Activity1

    Individual pearl millet plants [Pennisetum americanum (L.) K. Shum.] from the Tift #1 S-l population were found to differ in their ability to support bacterial acetylene reduction when screened in enclosed seedling agar tubes. There were also significant differences among the selfed and hybrid progeny of these plants. However, in some cases the progeny rankings did not match the original rankings of their parents. No trends were found as far as larger seedlings supporting higher acetylene reduction activity.
