Theoretical considerations based on Smith's coefficient of soil heterogeneity suggest that the use of systematically arranged control plots as fertility indexes in yield trials is of questionable value. Data from a 2-year study in Avena sativa L. support this conclusion. It is shown that analyses of covariance will avoid the possibility of overadjustment of yields in relation to a fertility index. Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
