Use of Control Plots in Yield Trials1

Abstract

Abstract

Theoretical considerations based on Smith's coefficient of soil heterogeneity suggest that the use of systematically arranged control plots as fertility indexes in yield trials is of questionable value. Data from a 2-year study in Avena sativa L. support this conclusion. It is shown that analyses of covariance will avoid the possibility of overadjustment of yields in relation to a fertility index.
