Varietal Resistance of Sorghum to the Sorghum-Shoot-Fly (Atherigona varia var. soccata)1

  1. A. Blum2

Abstract

Abstract

Five sorghum lines from Indian germ plasm and two susceptible varieties (Tx7078 and RS-610 hybrid) were evaluated for resistance to the sorghum-shoot-fly (Ath. erlgona varia). The lines were tested under both natural and artificial infestation.

Three selections possessed a satisfactory rate of resistance, controlled by three mechanisms: a) nonprelerence for oviposition, b) avoiding larva penetration through the leaf sheaths, and c) resistance of tillers formed after the growing apex destruction.
