Induction of Aneuploids in Hexaploid Oats, Avena sativa L., Through X-Irradiation1

Aneuploids were induced in the hexaploid oat variety ‘Cherokee’ through X-radiation (300r, 500r, 700r) of panicles in the pre-anthesis stage. The X1 and control plants were examined for abnormal tetrads (micronuclei in tetrads), and plants with more than 15% abnormal tetrads were classified abnormal and saved as potential sources of aneuploids and translocations. The percentage of abnormal plants was related to the X-ray treatments. Although the percentage (6.4) of monosomics was highest in the 700r treatment, we conclude that the 300r treatment (4.9%) was most efficient in producing monosomics since it was associated with the lowest percentage of translocations
