Comparative Seed and Forage Yield in Crosses of Selected Alfalfa Clones as Compared to Polycross Progeny1

  1. Bill Melton2

Nine selected alfalfa (Medicago saliva L.) clones were polycrossed and intercrossed in a diallel series. Forage and seed yield determinations were made. Only one cross significantly exceeded the forage yield of the check variety ‘Zia,’ whereas four significantly exceeded the check variety for seed yield. Most crosses yielded less than the polycross progeny of the parental clones; however, at least one cross within a group of crosses involving a given clone produced an increase in seed or forage yield over their corresponding polycross progenies. Increases were considerably higher for seed than forage yield.
