Abstract

Abstract

The reaction of variscite with H+ and OH- in water solutions was investigated and the [OH-] exponent in the variscite solubility product expression was found to be dependent upon solution pH, being proportional to [OH-]2 only at pH 4. An increase from 1 to 10 g. of kaolinite to 0.5 g. of variscite in 50-ml. volume increased the aluminum concentration in solution from 2.3 × 10-5 to 4.8 × 10-5 molar and diminished the phosphate concentration in solution from 2.5 × 10-4 to 0.7 × 10-4 molar in accord with solubility product principles.
