Magnesium Nutrition of Avocados under Sand Culture Conditions1

  1. Frank T. Bingham2

Abstract

Abstract

Magnesium deficiency symptoms and associated leaf analysis were produced with Hass variety avocado trees grown under sand culture conditions during a 5-year experiment. Correction of the deficiency by foliar sprays of Mg(NO3)2 was compared with root feeding with soluble MgSO4. Although some response to sprays was observed, it was concluded to be impractical. Deficiency was associated with leaf values of 0.20% Mg or less, with 0.10% indicative of an acute deficiency. Normal ranges are 0.30 to 0.60% Mg.
