Moisture, Pore Space, and Bulk Density Changes in Frozen Soil1

  1. A. W. Krumbach Jr. and
  2. D. P. White2

In the upper 15 inches of 2 frozen loam soils, one bare and one under alfalfa, moisture contents usually exceeded prefreeze field maximum. Total pore space was always above that before freezing; bulk density was predominantly less than the lowest expected prefreeze bulk density. Moisture changes in the frozen soils are attributed solely to internal moisture movement.
