In previous work it was found that Cl repulsion by arid-zone soi's from a solution having a high and uniform concentration of Cl is closely related to surface area as measured by ethylene glycol retention. Based on this information, a measurement of Cl repulsion has been incorporated into the NaOAc method for determining cation-exchange capacity. As a result, values for surface area, as well as cation-exchange capacity, can be obtained with but little additional analytical work, except for soils high in kaolinite and sesquioxides.Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
