Physical, morphological, and chemical properties of a continuum of soil pedons expressing the developmental range from Haploboroll (Chernozem) to Eutroboralf (Grey Wooded) were studied in northwestern Minnesota. The abrupt nature of the forest-prairie boundary and the abrupt change in physical, chemical, and morphologic properties of the soil pedons associated with this boundary do not reflect the gradual nature of the climatic or topographic gradients which occur across this area. The postglacial vegetation history for the area is documented and changes in soil development are related to this history.
