A Simple Apparatus for Obtaining Multiple Soil Atmosphere Samples from a Single Bore Hole1

  1. Jacques R. Jorgensen2

Abstract

Abstract

Soil atmosphere samples for analysis by gas chromatography can be obtained from reservoirs of Micro-Por 100, a porous plastic tubing. These reservoirs have a large surface area through which diffusion can occur to obtain representative samples from specific soil areas. The apparatus is simple, low cost, and easily installed. In a loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) plantation, CO2 concentrates in the soil atmosphere increased from ambient at the surface to 1.2% at a depth of 60 cm.
