A procedure using ion exchange resin to measure leaching losses of inorganic N in soils was tested in the laboratory. A 2-cm thick bed of anion or cation exchange resin reduced the concentration of the percolating solutions to 1% of their initial concentrations until the resins were one-third to one-half N saturated. Greater than 90% of the nitrate adsorbed by anion exchange resin was recovered after 12 weeks of incubation indicating that N transformations were minimal.
