Potassium hydroxide-extractable Al is proposed as the basis of a field or laboratory criterion for the classification of Andepts (Andisols). Twelve pedons from volcanic-derived parent material were studied, and in all of the pedons that met the existing criteria for an exchange complex dominated by amorphous material, KOH-extractable Al was > 20g kg−1 (2%). Since this extraction is quick and easy and can be run in the field, it will allow soil scientists to distinguish andic materials from others in the field. Please view the pdf by using the Full Text (PDF) link under 'View' to the left.
