Abstract

Abstract

Potassium hydroxide-extractable Al is proposed as the basis of a field or laboratory criterion for the classification of Andepts (Andisols). Twelve pedons from volcanic-derived parent material were studied, and in all of the pedons that met the existing criteria for an exchange complex dominated by amorphous material, KOH-extractable Al was > 20g kg−1 (2%). Since this extraction is quick and easy and can be run in the field, it will allow soil scientists to distinguish andic materials from others in the field.
