A portable tool was designed to collect soil samples, root cores, and bulk density cores on remote forest sites. Use of the designed tool allowed soil cores to be collected repeatedly from a study plot with minimal site disturbance. Cores 7.62 cm in diameter and up to 45.0 cm deep were collected and analyzed. Up to 10 cores per hour can be obtained by a two-man crew. Over 1000 cores were collected before maintenance of the tube was needed. Bulk density cores collected with the designed tool were not significantly different from cores collected using standard 7.62 cm rings.
