Maghemites (γ-Fe2O3) from highly weathered soils had unit cell parameters significantly lower than pure maghemites. This was due to Al for Fe substitution in the cubic structure. Al-substituted maghemites were synthesized by heating soil and synthetic Al-substituted goethites with sucrose and synthetic Al-substituted magnetites. Formation of Al-substituted maghemites in soils by fire is, therefore, postulated.
