Soil Surface Salty Crusts and Water Loss by Evaporation

Water evaporation measurements in small soil columns saturated with different salt solutions show that the surface salty crusts affect the water content as well as the water movement in the soils in the order: NaCl < Na2CO3 < Na2SO4 < MgSO4. Morphological observations suggest that these differences are due to the deposited salt crust.
